Workshop Content:
Research shows that the Arts is one of the most effective ways to bring a sense of calmness to the body and the mind. Children create art and draw because it is rooted in the need to relate to their world. However, children with autism have difficulty relating, and expressing their thoughts and feelings. I believe that Expressive Arts therapy is a viable intervention to help in in the development, growth, and ability to communicate and relate for children on the autistic spectrum in an alternative way.
I am happy to conduct this pre-conferece workshop designed for parents/ or professionals that focuses on the use of expressive arts in enhancing communication, self-expression, and emotional regulation for ASD children with key take-away points and suggested activities that they could implement in their workplace (for professionals) or at home (for parents).
Objectives:
– To gain a broad understanding of the discipline of expressive arts therapy from both theoretical and practical perspectives, and how it is used as a creative intervention for ASD youth
– To synthesize how expressive arts can enhance communication, build relational connections, and manage pent-up emotions
– To understand how to integrate key concepts and arts making experiences at home (for parents) and to supplement your work with your clients/students (for professionals)
